The birth stories in the beginning are warm and empowering however all take place on the farm there are no positive stories from elsewhere. The author then dives into the negatives of obstetrics versus the positives off midwifery... in my case there are no midwives around and it made me feel almost like a prisoner of my options. She then delves into birth how you can do it which i found absolutely worth the read! Then however, she falls back into discussing midwifery..telling us about past midwives an their experiences..i felt compelled to skip pages. I did not for fear of overlooking something useful and was dissappointed. The final chapters talk about our faulty obstetrics again and how we should strive to improve.
Overall this book had 30% information i wanted 30% babble about multiple midwiferies and their statics 30% absolutely horrifing information about obstetrical intervention and why to not go to them 10% amazingly personal stories of strength and how to have faith in your own body

A great read for anyone doubting themselves!

This book was inspirational. I had already settled on natural birth, but this served well to reassure me that I could and would do it. The birth stories are great, not to mention In May's down-to-earth practical advice. Highly recommended!

    What a GREAT BOOK!!!

I am a nurse who works in Labor and Delivery who routinely sees unessary c/sections, and see women herded in like cattle for slaughter.I so enjoyed this book that I was screaming with excitement! Here I was reading a book that really can help mom's with childbirth and what an approach! Birth is more than just getting your hair cut. Birth is the begining of a family, a new life, someone to love, someone to nurture, it is not a medical crisis that doctors want you to believe. In Ina May's book a birthing woman can learn to trust her body to do what it has been designed to do. I LOVED IT!!!

    An important resource

Quite simply, Ms. Gaskin rocks. She brings the honest, empowering truth about what the childbirth experience can and should be based on the 1,000s of births she has witnessed and facilitated. I have had two homebirths and she is right on. This is a great resource to help empower you to seek and obtain the kind of birth experience you want.

A Must Read for all women, whether using a midwife or doctor

This book opened my eyes to the options I have for labor and delivery. It provided information about procedures and medications from a viewpoint other than a doctor's. It gave me a better understanding of how my body goes through a natural labor and delivery when given the chance. Even if you are planning a hospital birth with a doctor, this book is an indispensible resource to learn how to work with your body during labor and delivery.

    A wonderful book!

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth has given me confidence and soothed my fears relating to childbirth like no other book in my collection. This is the book to read near the end of your pregnancy when you've scared yourself to death by reading about all of the things that can go wrong. Ina May's straightforward, honest and optimistic look at childbirth will give you the confidence you need to approach your own experience of labor.
