Peace came only to the defeated
Utley and Washburne have written many intelligent histories of American Indians. In INDIAN WARS they pull together the big picture. Their thesis is that the Indians were bound to end up subordinate to the European colonizers. There was, however, a chance that they would retain considerable freedom of action. They did not. --Their only hope was that three or more European powers would remain in North America and bid for Indian support in the hemispheric theaters of Europe's wars. But first the French left and then the Spanish. This doomed the Indians. What the British and Americans wanted they took. A sad tale soberly told.
