When I first found this book I thought it was going to be a typical 'Preach at you' story. Becuase it was written by Christian and published by a Christian press. But it wasn't preachy at all it was blast! RL Copple managed in his first chapter to capture the flair and fun of the old Xanth Novels of Piers Anthony and the Seventh Son books of Orson Scott Card. To be honest I was surprised at the originality and humor of the book. Most fantasy today is very similar, almost as if people were copying each other's works. This book was quite original and fun. If you liked the humor and adventure in books like The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, or The Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix this book should be right up your alley. I gave it four stars out of five. I would have given it five but it was too short (only a novella). Though there is a great article on magic and religion included at the end. For a young adult book it does exactly what it is supposed to: provide a fast, coherent, fun, magical adventure. JB Skaggs
