Better than most of the New 52!

This is a prequel to the game and it spans across the entire DC universe and tells an amazing what-if story! Also, it answers a lot of questions the game didn't.

I'm not a big fan of the "Batman good, Superman bad" type stories but this one is different. We actually get to see how a great hero becomes corrupted and it doesn't happen all at once. It's an evolution and it feels completely natural. We also get to see Wonder Woman's authoritarian side. Superman's corruption is very much guided by her. Batman isn't the Batgod in this one, he's just the guy who understands that humanity fears these powerful beings for a reason and does his best to talk Superman out of the path that he's on. Probably the most sympathetic figures in this book are Green Arrow and the Flash. They are clearly torn in their loyalties and just want to do the right thing.

If you are a fan of the pre-52 universe, you'll love this series. It has a lot of elements from that universe. Including married Superman.

I don't play the video game, and I thoroughly enjoyed this. Probably the best graphic novel I've read in a long time. It's fast paced, it pulls no punches. Very enjoyable. Looking forward to the collected Volume 2.

    more from this reviewer

    Surprisingly fun!

What's odd about a book like this is, even though I literally know exactly what's going to happen due to the source material, I still thoroughly enjoyed it because the great work of the creative team. Author Tom Taylor does a fantastic job of telling this story as if these versions of the characters we've known for decades were brand new without being cliched. The art looked rushed at times but was decent overall. I like this book much more than I expected and think there's now a fertile ground for more stories in this world.
