Readable, but Slow
One of my greatest frustrations about following book series with lead detectives is when the author decides to take the reader through the detectives' personal reflections and angst. I find that, more often than not, this comes at the expense of the pace of the story and I inevitably lose interest. I have taken no less than three weeks to trudge through this Van Veeteren mystery.
The story is straightforward enough, but most of the characters are all as tortured and brooding as Van Veeteren himself, so there's no great variation of mood, scenery, pace, or advancement. If you're in the mood for a weekend read in front of the fireplace on the couch, this is not it.
