Intentional Walk, a book that brings together faith and baseball
Intentional Walk, a book that brings together faith and baseball, deserves a great review. As a Christian, it was great to see that my favorite baseball team was filled with men who have devoted their lives to Christ. Intentional Walk showcases the stories of key members of the 2012 St. Louis Cardinals, such as Matt Holliday, David Freese, Jason Motte, Adam Wainwright, Lance Berkman, Carlos Beltran, and other contributing players/team personnel. The book features the testimonies of these players and how their journey with baseball was possible through their relationship with Jesus Christ. The members of the 2012 Cardinals were led by Mike Matheny, a fellow Christian and former Cardinal. Matheny has helped carry on the Godly atmosphere in the Cardinals clubhouse which has helped lead to the team’s success. Rains does a terrific job of incorporating how a player’s faith has determined his destiny. Intentional Walk is a must-read for all baseball fans, especially those who cheer on the Birds on the Bat. Rob Rains latest work has helped me realize why it is a privilege to call myself a member of Cardinal Nation.

Rob Rains is a former National League beat writer for USA Today¿
Rob Rains is a former National League beat writer for USA Today’s Baseball Weekly and for three years covered the St. Louis Cardinals for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat until its collapse in the 1980s. HIs latest book, Intentional Walk: An Inside Look at the Faith That Drives the St. Louis Cardinals is a look “inside” the faith that guides this all-star team. Was this review helpful? Now personally, I am not into baseball, let alone the Cardinals. My favorite team is the Chicago Cubs and it’s primarily because I like their cap. And if you’re not a big baseball person either, that’s ok. This isn’t really what the book is about.
Yes, this book uses the example of the St. Louis Cardinals throughout, but it is more about the lives of these players and how they saw God in their lives. Each chapter introduces you to a new member of the Cardinals franchise and illustrates how God pulled them through the highs and lows of their life.
I think through a good reading, the reader becomes more aware of just how many professional athletes are Christians. So while it may not be a book for the “die-hard” sports fan, it is still a book about what it means to be a Christian.
Rob Rains has an extensive career at being a writer, and so his author’s voice is easy to listen to and he does his best to enable even the not-so-familiar to follow along.
