Heartwarming.......

This was he first book in the series I read, and never wanted it to end. It's a charming Irish tale complete with a cast of characters that remind me somewhat of the PBS TV series "Doc Martin", though a bit earlier in time. Luckily, it seems the author doesn't want to end the story either and there are now several volumes. I've read them all, love them all, and am about to start the newest with another promised in the fall. There's no violence, no erotic scenes and certainly no vampires! It's a heartwarming story about the everyday lives of people who care about each other and their community.

    More from Patrick Taylor!

Patrick Taylor brings you right there into Ireland and you feel like you know each and every one of the characters. I always look forward to his next book to keep up with the characters.

    more from this reviewer

    Bummer....

I guess I shouldn't compare this book to the James Herriot or Jan Karon books, but I can't help it. I was so very disappointed. I found the stories of patients, etc. to be trite, not particulary interesting, and some situations appear to be attempts to emulate James Herriot's style, but they just don't go deep enough. I found it irritating that from practically the beginning of the book, or at least in the first couple of chapters, the doctor finds his "soulmate" and that is just about all the focus is on...plus even that appears to be a very watered down attempt to copy the story of Herriott and his beautiful wife's story. Altogether a huge disappoint for me, was looking forward to a good read, but I keep tossing it aside in boredom. Pity.

    Very simple story line

I have read both the first and second of the series and had to work to get through the second book. The story lines are way too simple and I found myself ho-hummin' through both books. It was the same old, same old every day in the doctors' lives and nothing was very climactic. Reading the books helped me appreciate other books that I have read and really enjoyed because I couldn't put them down. Both these books I could easily put down. I wanted to enjoy them because the main charachters are interesting but their stories were predictable and unexciting.
