Not what I thought it was going to be
Lenore was rarely mentioned. The focus...Read More
Lenore was rarely mentioned. The focus was primarily on Izzy, which is fine, but it was also a great deal about the author dealing with his own depression. This I was not expecting, and found it depressing for me as well.
It's an OK book, but not one of my favorites.Show Less

A book after book reader/stars to Jon Katz
I just finished reading Izzy & Lenore last night and I feel that this maybe the best one yet that I have read from Jon Katz. He put a few pictures in this one and that really helps you get the feel for the story.Izzy is a gentle caring dog that helps ill people. He gives them comfort and compaionship through hospice work. This is a great book of a man and his two dogs that work well together spending time with ones who are not so healthly anymore.
I have a Bernese Mountain Dog and she is beautiful, but high strung. This book has made me really want to teach her to warm up to people as they approach her >basically to settle down some.
I found myself laughing out loud and shed a few tears also. This book is well written and a complete joy to read.
I can't wait to pick up another one from this author,he's amazing.
Buy this book > you won't be sorry.4 out of 4 people found this review helpful.

A New Voice
Katz seems to have found a new voice for himself...a voice in which he can speak to the reader with more honesty, more feeling, and to be honest an easier more flowing speech. This book reads like travel literature, moving easily from section to section, experience to experience. The dogs are once again front and center, but I felt as though their 'voices' were more distinct. I felt that this book was much easier to read and enjoy than his previous titles, although it should be noted that some of the subject matter may be a little too close to home for some. Katz approaches these moments with humor and at the same time sensitivity...dare I suggest the word grace. An excellent read for anyone interested in the power of dogs and the bond between spirits.

Very Touching
What a wonderful book. As an avid dog lover, it is wonderful to see how others can feel the same about the wonderful benefits of our fuzzy friends. Thank you.

Not what I thought it was going to be
I was looking forward to a book about two dogs; their interaction with each other and the author. I have a black lab and know how wonderful this type of dog can be, so I was looking forward to some great stories about Lenore.
Lenore was rarely mentioned. The focus was primarily on Izzy, which is fine, but it was also a great deal about the author dealing with his own depression. This I was not expecting, and found it depressing for me as well.
It's an OK book, but not one of my favorites.1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.

A Must-Read for Animal-Lovers Everywhere!
If you are a lover of animals as I am, you are bound to enjoy this book. I have always noticed and been drawn to the different personalities of each pet I have loved and Mr. Katz brings each one of his animal friends' personality to such life in this book. I fell in love with each and every one as I saw them through the writer's eyes and often felt as if I was walking through the woods beside them or going on one of their very special visits. It was my first Katz book, but I am sure it will not be my last!

Great for Animal Lovers
I found Jon Katz's book, A Dog Year, by chance in a Barnes and Noble, and I was hooked - read his next 4 books straight. If you are any kind of animal lover, not just dogs, this is a wonderful book. It reminds us how unique all of our pets can be and how strong the bond between humans and animals can become.

What a beautiful, inspirational story!!!
This book is the first I've read by John Katz, though it' not the first he's written. The story is very touching and if you do dog therapy work, you can really relate to the stories in each chapter. The therapy work is hospice, which is very difficult, as you know how each person's story will end. But, Katz is truly an inspiration, as he continues the work in spite of the often heart-rending pain that comes with getting to know someone and hearing their life story, only to lose them shortly thereafter. I have a friend who has two therapy dogs that visit nursing homes. She became upset after the death of one of her closest patients and thought about quitting. I sent her a copy of this book and after reading it, she was inspired enough to go back to her visits, much needed by the patients that her dogs touch. I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone who does therapy work with animals, who has been touched by such visits or anyone who believes in the magic that pets bring to our lives.

Izzy and Lenore
This is a wonderful book. It's amazing that the author was able to find in his heart to keep this special dog. The greeting of Hospice patient's in the delicate manner this dog could read people. This book made me laugh and cry. Having just had hospice for my mother two years ago the people that visit patient's are a breed all their own. They have a special gift to not only over see the dying but to be so caring and supportive to the caretakers. And having a dog's such as Izzy and Lenore visit the dying and give that person a peace like non other.
