Good INtroductory Text
I've been interested in Japanese arts and martial ways for a number of years. but, without some general framework for Japanese history the prints, calligraphy and swords are just lovely isolates.
This was not my first survey text on Japan, It reads as a college text for an intro course. This is not a bad thing for the uninitiated. It was well prepared and presented, easy to read, but comprehensive.
My principal complaint is the text size. The overall presentation of the material would have been improved with a larger point size of type. but then the book would have been larger, and more expensive.
Overall, I recommend this book to someone seeking a good outline of Japanese history.
