    Josephus The Complete Works

I use this book to supplement my study of the Torah. I joined a Torah Study to better understand the Hebrew religion. My daughter who has a Bachelors degree in Bible and Religion recommended it as it was one required reference in all her college papers. It is so easily understood and often reads like contemporary literature it seems hard to think that the original was written shortly after the death of Jesus and the translation made so many, many years ago. I find it gives a fuller picture of what a very educated New Testament Era Jew believed. Since Josephus was not a follower of Jesus his assesment of Jesus and John the Baptizer are not flattering but they give insight into the thoughts of the non believer and depth to the subject. I would suggest it to any one interested in a first hand account of some one who was there just for the contrast in perspective and enhanced story details of the patriarchs and Jewish history.

A Jewish Literary Master at work

Thie should be the first book read in an in-depth manner about the history of the Jewish people and their special relationship with God. In the antiquities, Josephus has attempted rewite of the Bible in a literary form and has rather well succeeded. Think of the position he occupied in relation to th Romans and especially to the people of Galilee. He was an intelligent man who recognized the size and strength of the Roman forces and the impossibility of beathing the. I suppose in that sense he would have been classed an "Accomodator" which was, in fact, hated by the Essene and Sicarii but at least kept him grounded in reality. The portion of the Maccabean revolution seems clear and concise and is very informative. After this, you might choose to read the Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocryphaand the several of the books by Robert Eisenman. I think a new vision of the Jew might become known to you and an easier understanding how their true religion has been thoroughly hijacked and has little or no resemblance to what we the christian culture claim to be the true faith.
