If you have read other reviews of this book you noticed that some people find it repugnant and others delightful. This is a book for those who truly love to read and who are truly eager to learn. It is best to describe a book in a sentence or two if possible, so here's my try at it: Upon discovering a remarkable map, the nervous Henry and his eccentric Uncle are off to Iceland, where the ancient map leads them to a dormant volcano that witholds the path to the center of the earth. Along with them is their guide, Hans, who, being always calm and cool, leads them imperterbably through fields of diamonds, underground animal habitats, and dangerous encounters. The reader soon finds, along with the entertaining characters, that successfully descending to the earths center will not be as difficult as ascending back to the earth's crust! Again, don't bother reading this book if your attention span is minimal, Jules Verne does sometimes get pedantic! That is why I have given this book four stars. It really is a shame to waste 12 dollars, so I ask that you be a responsible reader and know your interests. If scientific things are not for you than find something else. If your a science-fiction reader, you know that sometimes the author lavishes you with details. So there, I hope this is helpful.

A must read for science fiction lovers

Jules Verne¿s classic novel Journey to the Center of the Earth is a must read for any science fiction book lovers. I rate this book four stars because this book has great imagery and is very believable considering the fact that this journey never took place. This book deserves four stars because Verne¿s imagination makes this book an easy read with his use of vivid descriptions of the journey. The journey starts off with a scientist who finds a map to the center of the earth. Himself, his nephew, and a guide journey down an old volcano towards the center of the earth. On their journey they find all kinds of, thought to be extinct, animals and cavemen. Although the three men find many exciting things they also encounter many hardships. The men are suffering from lack of food because they are miles from the surface of the earth, and they lack water because there are no water sources nearby. The men somehow find a river that is boiling hot due to the fact that they are inside a dormant volcano. When they find the underground world they also get food from the wild plants growing around them. In my opinion this book is one of the greatest science fiction books that I have read. Jules Verne is an excellent writer who wrote many great books. This book is about three men who go on an expedition to the center of the earth. The question that you have to ask yourself before you read this is will they make it out alive. Well you will have to find out yourself by reading this great novel.

    It's just plain good readin'...

A breathlessly told adventure, this Verne novel should be read by anyone who likes that wide-eyed feeling of sheer wonder. The characters are sketched out just enough for the reader to identify, and to ride along with comfortably. The discovery of the center of the earth is genuinely thrilling, from an intellectual point of view as well as an action- adventure perspective.

A scientisits dream novel that must be read.

What a great story. Unblivebale ending even though i think it could have been better. The story starts out right a way. They get into action within the first few chapters. The Scientist is reading a book when a unusual piece of paper falls out on the floor. There is some kind of code on it and even though it could be figured out by any five year old, it takes the professer overnite to figure it out. The paper leads them deep into the Earth where they discover many problems. One of which, is water. You will have to read the book to find out how in the world they get out of this underground planet.
