Historical Fiction

Just Ella

Margret Patterson Haddix

¿¿Once upon a time,¿ I said mischievously, wrinkling my nose so Jed would know I was making fun of the whole thing, `I was just a poor girl in rags¿¿ But somehow remembering everything transported me back, and I quickly settled into seriousness. I wasn¿t even pretending to be Princess Cynthiana Eleanora anymore. I was myself again, Ella Brown, always hungry, always cold, always angry at my stepmother¿s and stepsister¿s cruelties. . . .¿

When you hear a `cinders Ella¿ story you think of a poor little girl being whisked away from her stepmothers and stepsisters home to live with the prince and have a happily ever after. Not this story. Ella has learned that her happily ever after is not so great but more¿ BORING! When Ella is taken off to the palace grounds she thinks that that she will have everything she has always wanted, but is endless, boring lessons and stupid, annoying restrictions what she wanted? No! Ella feels bad when she tries to end the engagement, but finds Quog, a terrible THING in her way to her escape.

As I read this story I was quickly able to guess the end by the 3rd-4th chapter. I could have stopped reading, flipped to the last page read that, and said DONE! But I didn¿t, I stuck it through and I was right about the end. This book was good¿ for a 5th-6th grader; I would say that it was pretty pathetic. I don¿t advise you to read this book if you are older than 11-12. IF you are older and you are in to fairytale and princesses than I say read it. But if you are more of a reader like me, who likes a suspense-full, twisted novel; I think you might despise this book as much as I do.

Over all, the book was, well, TERRIBLE. But it kept me busy and I read it. I will never buy this book for my personal collection. I will not be too sad if I never have to read it again.

    ....

This book would have been good. But the ending was STUPID!!!! Seriously, it just says she went back to work. She should have FELL IN LOVE WITH JED.

    Predicable.....

This story was very good, but it was just like cinderella. It was very predictable me to me, because you already know what is going to happen in the end! The only reason why I rated it 2 stars, was because it was like any other cinderella story. I DO recommend it, but it was just OK!

    Just Ella

Have you ever heard that old, somewhat cliched saying: 'Never judge a book by its cover'? Well, it may be old and somewhat cliched, but it's very true. At first I was drawn to this book because of its attractive cover, but after reading it, I was utterly disappointed. The characters were dull and insipid, with the prince being nothing but a mean, witless clod, and Ella herself rather mundane as a character. I don't understand why this book received all its great reviews; it doesn't deserve even half of them. While I will admit that Haddix had a great idea to start with - it just didn't turn out great in the end.

Have you ever that old, somewhat cliched saying: 'Don't judge a book by its cover'? Well, old and somewhat cliched it may be, but it's very true; it speaks for Just Ella. At first I found the cover to be rather attractive, but I was utterly disappointed by the book itself. The characters were dull and insipid, with the prince being a mean, witless clod and Ella herself rather mundane as a character too. This book doesn't deserve even half the reviews it's gotten.

Did you adore Ella? No, Me neither.

First, I was disappointed because I incorrectly thought that this would bve a sequel to Ella Enchanted. Obviously, it was not. But a good book should be able to hold its own ground. This book definitely could not. While I enjoyed perhaps the first chapter or two, by the end, it had ruined Cinderella for me forever. The Prince was now conniving and pathetic. Ella was not magical and charming, but ordinary and inpersonable. I could not bring myself to like this Ella at all, not one bit. If I coulf erase the whole thing from my mind, I would, just to enjoy the original Cinderella once again.

    it was ok

It was an OK book. I thought it would be a lot better but the ending is disappointing. The Ella in this book wasn't very likable.

I hated this book. I thought it would be a good book but it had a very poor ending. Unless there is a sequal it really stinks.

    'Just Ella' Is Mildly Entertaining

Well, let me start by saying I was expecting a lot. I thoguht 'Just Ella' was going to have more fairy tale and less lovey-dovey stuff. There wasn't much fairy tale, but it was interesting to see how the author decided to make the story go from 'happily ever after' to 'unhappily ever after', and then at the end, it was back to 'happily ever after'. It was okay.
