Just My Luck by Kelley Vitollo is a satisfying but highly melodramatic conclusion to the original Shamrock Falls group of friends. It does leave the door open for more books in this series though. Jace is a love-em-and-leave-em kind of guy, for obvious reasons once his backstory is revealed. His inheritance, unfortunately, is tied up in a foolish matchmaking will. Betsy, for her part, is also reluctant to get involved with anyone. Her backstory makes it plausible, even if the backstory itself is wildly implausible. Ultimately, while always expecting this pairing, the weight of their combined histories made this story the weakest of the three.

While happy that Betsy and Jace get their moment to shine in this series, it would have been better with more plausible stories. No matter what good intentions there might have been behind the will and its enforcement, it was not possible to accept it as the act of love that characters tried to make it out to be. For Betsy, the impediment to love was even more implausible. Given the situation, there is no way that her past was not littered with incidents (most likely involving first responders). These backstories weakened the overall plot significantly.

Nonetheless, the romance between Betsy and Jace was quite sweet and a little tart, which was perfect. His kindness and overall good-ness was displayed well, but without large neon signs. Betsy moving from crush into full-blown love was handled with a great deal of realism. Jace’s gradual realization of how he felt about Betsy was also done very well. If you can focus only on the romantic plot, the book is quite good.
