a disturbing masterpice
De Sade's work is so explicit in its description of sexuality, so free with its four letter words and other forms of profanity, and so vulgar in its graphically described acts of sexual violence that it makes the reader cringe in horror and disgust. Yet at the same time, one can see the beauty and virtue in these tomes of sick debauchery.

'Le bon Gourmet' Daniel Di Fabrizio 32, Ny
This is the master piece, a Flower. Sade play with a pure Ingenuity and love. A Poem, Prosa, Poema. He's work represent the Legend of sexual behaviors and vice it self. This book is a Beauty on the Beast side.

The Marquise of Sadism
Alot of people feel that this is disgusting, fascinating, and chock full of debatable philosophy. I think if everyone was like De Sades characters, the world would be an awful place to exist in. I like the idea of personal freedoms in society and choosing to live whatever lifestyle you want. The world needs balance between both, and not let our vices always win over our virtues. I did not finish the story of Justine because I found it to be a little stretched. Every single person she came across did her more harm then the last... so the arguement of vice vs virtue was a little tipped. This book is sexually explict too..so readers- fair warning.

Sade is an instrumental writer in the history of sexuality, and for this alone he is worth reading. On top of this, he has a razor wit and his satire drips from these pages, especially the titular 'Justine'. He brings his entire society (and possibly ours) into question and shows us its dark underbelly. Definitely recommended, if you are not light of heart or stomach.

I never heard of Marquis until recently. Now he's my favorite author of all time.In this book he never bores you at all. He makes you feel like you are there with Justine.Reading each page made me cringe and wanting more. And he given me just that. Justine seems confused and retells her horrors to a woman she knows. Great read!

Contrast of perversity and sophisticated way of describing it.
Sophisticated, erotic, atmosphere - pornographos, but described in classicism manner, dialogues full of sophistry, demagogy, high moral standards versus instinctus, depiction of all the possible ways of intercourse to be better than losing virginity in vaginal sex. Detailed sexopatology long before Freud.

Exquisite
I felt this book was absolutely amazing. The only reason I almost didn¿t give it a fifth star was, as was mentioned in an earlier review, Justine did not act like a person would in such situations, nobody argues pro¿s and con¿s of virtue/vice while being raped. I did, however, altogether love it and I would definitely recommend it.

Graphic but made me think
I'd heard of this book from a friend, and read it recently. While the sexual situations are at time downright revolting, I liked the fact that at least there was dialog that helped me understand the mindset behind the extreme bondage and discipline found here. The 'sadistic' tendency obviously has more components than psychologists prefer to admit. A very enlightening book in this way.

Sometimes erotic, sometimes not
This book is a multi-facted one. On one hand you have almost too many lengthy, graphic descriptions of just about every sexual and/or sadistic act that is possible. On the other hand you have a somewhat searching discussion of what justifys these acts. I'm must not sure that I buy the justifications. I admit that I enjoy reading DeSade's writings but I sure wouldn't want him for a next door neighbor.

Who ponders philosophy while being raped?
That's what I would like to know. I have read Justine many times and I do consider it a classic, buy it, read it but realize that most of the book is written for DeSade's own pleasure. His writing in Justine is mediocre at best, the reader becomes slightly irritated with the main character, Justine(Miss Virtue 1791) as we follow her through one sexual peril after another. Her character is unreal. I know that if I was being raped and/or tortured I would not have asked them why they prefer 'vice over virtue',and then proceed to argue the point. As I said before, read this book, read his work because DeSade was an important figure in history not a brilliant author. Take it for what it is, a classic piece of writing.
