    Great Book for the Basics

The author does a great job of covering the basics. My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 a year ago and age 4 and there is a huge learning curve. I also like to hear other's perspectives on parties, sleepovers and school. Well written book.

    What a fantastic book!

I truly enjoyed Kids First, Diabetes Second, and believe that is would be very useful to any parent or caregiver of a child with diabetes. The author addresses virually every important aspect of managing a child's diabetes: the diagonsis, basic how-to information, diet and nutrition, exercise, sleepovers, holidays, school situations, you name it...it's in this book!
Something I really enjoyed was the fact that throughout the book there are useful sections contributed by other well known people in the diabetes online and offline communities, writing about topics they're experts on. Kerri Sparling adds a section about diabetes camps. Kelly Kunik writes about traveling with diabetes. Scott Benner talks about 504 plans and building relationships with your school. And the incredible diabetes expert Gary Scheiner is in there as well, along with many other people who provide inspiration to people with diabetes everywhere.
But the best thing about this book is how the information is presented. The auther is ver very obviously writing from her own personal experiences and from the heart. Every page of the book has helpful tips that she has actually tried at home, tips that have worked for her and her family. I really identified with per positive and practical outlook on managing diabetes, parenting, and life in general. Her philosophy is always making sure that you focus on raising your 'Kids First" is a great message for all parents of children with diabetes , and for parents of children with any chronic condition like diabetes. Thanks Leighann!
If you're a parent of a child with diabetes (especially a child who was recent diagnosed), or if you're a caregiver to a child with diabetes (grandparents, aunts/uncles. daycare provider, etc.), pick up a copy of this book. You'll be glad you did!
