WOW! This book and the followup were amazing.
I was so absorbed in the story and the characters. I really could not put it down. The passion, adventure, and story line through this book will have you anxious and in need of the finish, which will keep you guessing until the last. After finishing the story I wanted more.

This is a must read and I have also bought her other books which are good but not to compare with this story. -

The Best
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I love all things Scottish. This book helps you see why the Scots fought so hard for their own land and their own way of life. The characters are realistic, people you might actually meet if you lived in that time. The love between Mary and Alex is deep and true, not a happily-ever-after kind of fantasy, but real ups-and-downs, love-in- spite-of-disagreements type. Both Kilgannon books are wonderful. If you believe in love, read them.

One of the best books I have ever read!!
Kathleen Givens yanks you from your seat into the pages of her story. She tells the story in a unique way that forces you to become personally involved with each of the characters. I have read many historical romances of this time-period and region, and find that one usually runs into the other after a while. Often when I try to remember a character that I particularly liked, I can't remember the book because unfortunately, one is very much like the other. This is not so with Kilgannon. I distinctly remember each character, the setting, and most of all, the emotion evoked from this very well-written book. I still get teary-eyed when I think of the heroine, Mary Lowell, cutting her husbands beautiful blonde hair so that it will not get in his eyes when he heads into battle. I lived in Scotland for many years and miss it very much now that I live in the States again. A book like this brings me back home again and reminds me why I love that proud and beautiful country. Great job Kathleen! I can't wait to read The Wild Rose of Kilgannon.

Trick of the trade
I love Scottish romance, however I also read ramance for 'happily everafter'. Ms. Givens has picked up the trick of the trade to sell books, leave them hanging. Unfortuneately, I've already purchased the second book. If it is left hanging, I will not buy the third. On a positive point, she writes in first person and does it well. But I was left with the feeling she was trying to imitate Gabaldon and failed if that was her attempt. I do not recommend this piece of work if you do not wish to get 'sucked in' to a drawn out series of books. There are better ways to sell books then Ms. Givens has chosen. If this is her way, she can sell her books elsewhere.
