Worth the read, but read it in order
This is the third book of a series, and while for some books that doesn't matter, you will enjoy this one more if you have read the first two.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
More than that, if you ever plan to read the first two, do it before you read this one, because there is no escaping the spoilers!
That said, I thoroughly enjoy the series. I found the first one at a battered sidewalk stand for 50 cents. I actively searched for the second one and came across it in a local used bookstore. When I finished that? I went and bought this third book new.
And it is worth it, and I am keeping it, and I plan to re-read it.
It is a solidly built fantasy world, with enough variety in cultures and geography and character to completely immerse you, and leave you with the feeling that you could explore a lot further.
What keeps it down to 3 stars for me, is that the sheer exhaustion which the protagonist struggles with pervaded the book a little TOO well for me; it is hard to build tension when the typical viewpoint is from someone so fatalistic and, well, tired. I did not feel any of the urgency that the first two books instilled so skillfully, and while that was probably quite deliberate, I felt the lack.
Mind you, I'm waiting impatiently for the fourth book!
