Drool-worthy patterns--though not exactly easy to make
I'll admit I bought this book before I knew how to cable, just because the patterns are so gorgeous and inspiring, and the photography is so nice. Plus, I love Norah Gaughan--she's a knitting goddess. Most of the patterns aren't that practical, however--they're knitted art, not the sweater you wear to the store for a carton of milk. (That's the only reason I docked one star--I haven't yet figured out where to wear some of the things I want to make.)

The patterns will challenge you, but they also teach you a lot about construction as you go. (The Turtle Skirt is a prime example--it's simple in concept, and beautiful once done, but putting it together could result in a few whimpers if you don't prepare yourself. You thought it would be so easy!) The inspiration Norah gives for each pattern is also inspiring if you're a knitwear designer yourself--you see the things around you in a whole new way.
There are a few easier things, for knitters with some experience. The cover blanket is a great pattern, for example. The tam pattern is also nice, and the child's mittens are grand. I think there's one sweater that's even somewhat easy :)
If you're a knitting geek, I recommend the book, but it's not for knitting novices. -
