This is my favorite in the series so far. I liked the poetry and found the hero to be a total sweetheart.

Lady Louisa Windham daughter of the Duke of Moreland, has a secr

Lady Louisa Windham daughter of the Duke of Moreland, has a secret that could ruin her reputation forever. Sir Joseph Carrington, known almost as the P. I. to the nobility (not to mention being a pig farmer), has a few secrets of his own. Who will find out whose secrets, first?

What I liked about this novel: neither Lady Louisa, nor Sir Joseph, are particularly young. Louisa, at nearly 30, is practically an aged spinster in that era. Sir Joseph is a widower with young daughters. I like that, as seems to be a trademark in Burrowes’ Duke of Moreland series, the entire family gets involved in sorting things out. This is something we don’t see in many romantic novels; the hero and heroine seem to exist in a vacuum, with perhaps one best friend apiece, unlike real life. I love that the novel includes plenty of humor and very steamy sex scenes.

I liked that Louisa was very bold with her sexual needs. “Instead of sending a note, she’s been greedy, sensing she could at least have shocking intimacies with him, even if the worst were to happen tomorrow.”

What I didn’t like about this novel: Sir Joseph’s secret social standing is conveniently high enough to make him a perfect match for Louisa. He is also almost too understanding of her erudition and literary ambitions.

    Excellent

This is the sixth book in the Windham family series. Lady Louisa is the middle daughter of the Duke of Moreland. She has a youthful literary secret that is about to surface. And if that's not enough she has an unfortunate encounter with a disreputable fortune hunter. A family friend, Sir Joseph Carrington who fought along side two of her brothers in the war against Napoleon, defends her honor. Being in need of a wife, he offers her marriage. Lady Louisa keeps secret the literary book of her youth, and Sir Joseph, telling her of his two daughters, keeps his many other secrets. This is a story filled with the warmth and love of family. It is also terribly funny. And I loved Sir Joseph's "boon companion", Lady Ophelia.

    Sir Joseph is wonderful

I love the hero in this story...his awkwardness and quietness. I also like Louisa's extreme intellectualism that makes her a social outcast but not pedantic. The poetry is great. The only weakpoint is there is a little too much knowing togetherness of the brothers from previous books. The are all great characters, but come off as flat in this story.

    Inviting read and realistic characters

I’m not sure what it was about this book, but it seemed more real compared to the other Windham girls, to date. Maybe it had something to do with the male lead not being traditional. He wasn’t described as handsome, he was flawed in several ways, but that led to him feeling so much more real. Louisa also wasn’t a fancy heroine. She wasn’t adventurous, though she was outspoken. She wasn’t the most breathtakingly beautiful of the girls, but she was approachable. She was insecure in a way that I could easily relate to. The plot and conflict were not over the top, but more realistic. The whole story was not a gripping page-turner, but rather felt like I was peaking at what a real relationship might have started out as and unfolded to be. I liked it. It wasn’t strong and passion-filled, but warm and inviting.
