DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!
This book was terrible. Although i only read the first few chapters so far the plot makes no sense. She meets Luke in a funny situation and talks to him like shes known him forever. On their next encounter she he leaves quickly and she doesnt even question it. Im just like wth. She barely knows the guy and suddenly she falls in love with him?! Dont even waste your time reading it. The writing is awesome but the romance makes no sense! The stuff about faeries is cool but come on she doesnt even questions the guys background! Seriously dont try this. The review makes it sound a lot better than it actually is. DO NOT TRY THIS....

I read the short story in Kiss Me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love & it was interesting...a sad fae story, so I decided to read Maggie Stiefvaters's fae series. I must say, it was a good quick read for me; it kept me captivated. The main character Deirdre makes the same blind faith moves with the "cute-stranger" (Luke) that is typical in such books but in this book it was refreshing that she acknowledges the oddness of it herself (yeah!).

Deirdre's struggle with the changes of being a cloverhand was entertaining. I wonder what James is. I really "felt" for Luke's struggles, his trying to be a good person. His fear of what Deirdre will think of him when the truth comes out.
I am looking forward to book #2. I don't believe it'll answers any questions I have about Deirdre's family but I will enjoy James's story.the ending of this book wasn't quiet what I was expecting/hoping but it wasn't' too sad. -

Very poorly written
Really stupid book. There is no plot whatsoever, and certainly no character development. Suddenly, they are in love, suddenly they are in trouble, suddenly the book ends. No explanation. Don't bother picking it up, its not worth it. If you want a really excellent series, read The Iron Fey series, Iron King, Iron Daughter, and Iron Queen.

Dislike.
I agree wholeheartedly with Anonymous. I thought this book was atrocious. Rarely do I pick up a book and hate it--in fact, I can't remember a time. But this one, I did. The character's reactions were just unbelievable, except for James, the only SANE and rational character, who of course isn't the one she picks. I can't remember much of the story anymore (I must have blocked it from my memory) but there's a time when she thinks Luke had murdered someone or some such thing--and she just writes it off. SHE HARDLY KNOWS THE GUY. This book just appalled me. I'm sorry I ever read it, and sorrier still that I paid money for it. I'm usually not this harsh... but good LORD. It was bad.

An Easy, Okay Read
I first have to say that I love Maggie Stiefvater's writing style. However, I think this book does not live up to her other novel series. As some others have said, it did take a while to get into this book. It is a good read and does have some great attributes. However, I think I will be trading this one in for a new book. It seemed at times that things happened out of nowhere and I was sometimes left to wonder exactly what happened. Was kind of disappointed that I bought the sequel and it has NOTHING to do with the first story line. You never really find out what happens to Luke except for what is said at the end of the first book. Overall, a quick, easy read. But don;t be expecting groundbreaking story or plot. Just average...

Okay...
Maggie's Shiver is one of my favorite books so reading Lament felt like a natural thing to do. However, I'm on the fence w/ this one. Maybe b/c I didn't grow up hearing stories about Fairies, but Dee's easy acceptance of fairies hopping around and running amuck seems almost silly! And Luke showing up basically out of thin air and then the two of them becoming joined at the hip! No one seems to question the reality of this. It's just "Oh hey, strange guy. What? Fairies are messing w/ us? Okay."

Also, the editing seems a little sloppy. One example - I think it's the point where Luke tries to explain to Dee why he is being controlled, he hasn't made mention of any name/title, but Dee knowingly comments on the existence of a queen. Little things like that bother me; It jolts the reader out of the moment. I'm hoping Ballad will be better. I still love Maggie though! -

Great vacation read! - quick and enthralling
Lament is a wonderful whirlwind of great and captivating storytelling! Maggie Stiefvater consistently presents the reader with gems of metaphor and description. The beginning can be considered Twilight-esque, but don't let that turn you off - this one really is worth reading, and what a quick read it was, for about 200 pages!

Another Good Fairy Book
Stiefvater's Lament, based on Celtic lore, features ruthless fairy royalty, a talented mortal, and a love story. Beautiful writing.
