    Spanish For Gringos

This is the second time that I have used this text for an 8-week adult Community School Spanish I and II class. I have found this textbook to be extremely user-friendly and non-intimidating for adult learners in listening (CD version) reading, writing, and speaking Spanish in the shortest amount of time. Even the grammar is introduced painlessly. My students pronounce and begin reading Spanish correctly by the end of the first or second night. The colorful illustrations also aid learning. What the book lacks in the cultural aspects of Spanish language-learning, can be compensated for in The Hispanic Way ISBN 0-8442-7389-9.

    Basic good book for travel.

This text was used for an 8 week conversational Spanish class thru a local community college. The teacher is from Argentina and teaches high school Spanish. The text is a good basic text, for introductory conversational Spanish, especially for those traveling. The Chapters are short, have some english translation and are easy to get thru. It is based upon Spanish from Mexico; therefore some words are different than in Spain and the Americas.
The dictionary included is fair at best and only for class use. For those that want more, best to use a real dictionary with verb conjugations. This text will help with basics, such as greetings, directions, introductions and even medical terms. There is review in later chapters for different situations - which is helpful.
If someone truly would like to be able to speak and read Spanish then this is not the text. It helps, but is far from a complete text. The english translation and phonetics does help.
I travelled to Colombia and used Pimsleur Spanish; which was slightly boring - but allowed frequent repetition, and how words are actually pronounced. Allowed more real time conversation.Good luck.

    more from this reviewer

    Funny, Colorful, Effective

I zipped through most of this book before a trip to Mexico and found that I remembered a lot of what I had learned/reviewed. There's just enough repetition to learn words, the stories are funny, there's enough blank space on each page to practice writing what's being studied, easy pronunciation guides appear under a lot of the words and the answers to all the quizzes, exercises and puzzles are at the bottom of each page (instead of at the back).

I don't know that this would work for someone brand new to Spanish, unless they really stuck with it over one length of time, like a month. For anyone with at least a year or two of Spanish under their belt, this book represents a fun, colorful way to solidify and expand on your vocabulary and ability to speak. There are flashcards in the back, maps of Madrid and Mexico City, and a handy, albeit small, removable dictionary.

With all the book/workbook choices out there to learn a language, Barron's usually falls in the above average/way above average category.

Book is not organized logically, with unnecessary complexity in examples

The application won't let me rate individual areas of the book a 1-star, or else I would have rated certain areas lower than a 2-star.

I am using this book in a class of 10 students, non-credit class at a community collage. The class is often confused about why the book is teaching concents in a certain order. It is also focused on Spanish (European) and some words are different in Latin America and for people in the USA it's best to learn the Latin American version.
