This 2 disc version of the soundtrack is about as complete as any cast recording. My original London Cast Recording leaves out "Fantine's Arrest" and some of the music from the barricade scenes, for example. I wish they had included more of the recitatives and music that was written specifically for the movie, such as the scene where Javert first encounters Jean Valjean as mayor in the factory, and the scene where Javert offers to resign for incorrectly believing the mayor is Jean Valjean, just before "Who Am I."
The singing is a little more raw than we are used to from the concert productions and the cast recordings, but the film cast brings passion. Much has been said about Anne Hathaway's brilliant performance of Fantine, but I feel not enough superlatives have been shown at Hugh Jackman and Eddie Redmayne. Hugh Jackman is the best leading man in musical theatre right now (two Tony Awards and counting) and thoroughly deserved his Academy Award nomination. His voice is rich and powerful, as well as sensitive and subdued, as the scene requires. Not since The Fountain has he had a role that showcased his immense talent and allowed him to prove that he is one of the best actors out there--so much more than Wolverine or a pretty face/body. Eddie Redmayne also brought the intensity, that made his Marius leap off the screen for me. His version of "Empty Chairs" is so moving and I look forward to perhaps seeing him sing again in a film or on stage. With more consistent training, he could make an excellent musical lead on stage.

I have truly enjoyed listening to this recording. I had the older stage versions on cassette tapes, and when looking for CD format, opted to go with the movie soundtrack. Whenever I play this, I'm re-imagining the movie. It would have been nice to have all the music, but to tell the truth, I don't really notice the condensed version. I'm getting it for my daughter-in-law for Christmas.
