If you have to learn from a book, pick this one.
Doris Southard has taught lacemaking for many years, and that experience translated beautifully when she wrote this book. There are detailed instructions for everything from making a pillow to winding bobbins as well as many patterns for making lace. The patterns progress from the simplest to more complex laces, and each one builds on the lessons learned before. Others have complained that Southard does not use the latest terminology. If you can't wrap your mind around the idea that a "half throw" is the same as a "half stitch" you might want to use another book, but by and large this book is an excellent guide for someone who wants to learn bobbin lace and hasn't got a local lacemaker to teach them.
