A template for living or dying.

Letters from the Land of Cancer is an inspiring template for how to live or die. Walt Wangerin takes us along with him while he travels through the scary land of illness, hospitals, doctors, fear, relationships and more. He talks about how to live with the cancer as opposed to "battling" it, and how to come to terms with your own mortality. As he says, "Whether you live, or die it's a gift."

It meant a lot to me personally because my best friend of over 50 years died last August of the exact same cancer as Pastor Wangerin. His essays on-line were a great inspiration to her. The book helped me to understand more of what she went through, and I wish she, and I, could have read it before she died.

I would recomend this book to anyone, whether they've had any experience with cancer or not.

    Dear Mr. Wangerin

Oh, Mr. Wangerin, I am so sorry. I had no idea you'd been sick, let alone writing a book about it. I am 58 and began trusting God when I was 17. These last few months, I have been slowly savoring your Book of God: The Bible as a Novel and have had several very deeply stirring moments because of it. This last November, I was diagnosed with operable and mild lung cancer and am even now recovering (cancer-free) from surgery. Most of my recovery went well and was a noticeable blessing in disguise. However, last week I had a temporary setback that brought me some of the darkest nights of my entire life. Not so much of my spirit . . . but definitely of my body and soul. It has given me such a sorrow, short of the mercy of God, for those who are suffering. Today, I saw in my email box a notification of your new book coming out soon. Perhaps by the time it is released, I can bear to read it. I *know* I want the benefit of your hard-fought (and won) insights. God's mercy on you, dear man. I shall try to find your website and send this message to you there, too. With appreciation, mjgm
