Nice Intro

Nice introduction to a new author. Good characterizations. Writing so good that you don't have to wonder why she has won so many awards.

LETTERS TO A SOLDIER: Prelude to ONE WAS A SOLDIER

I've been waiting a few years for Julia Spencer-Fleming to continue the Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne love story/mysteries. I don't read hardback fiction, and as of this February 2012 writing, the paperback is not yet released, so I haven't read ONE WAS A SOLDIER, wh...Read More
I've been waiting a few years for Julia Spencer-Fleming to continue the Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne love story/mysteries. I don't read hardback fiction, and as of this February 2012 writing, the paperback is not yet released, so I haven't read ONE WAS A SOLDIER, which I think you need to do immediately after reading LETTERS for LETTERS to coalesce. Otherwise, it just doesn't seem to have the punch it should have. For one thing, it's been awhile since I SHALL NOT WANT was published, so it's easy to forget Clare is a helicopter pilot and in the NG. Overall, though LETTERS is well written in Spencer-Fleming's usual good style, it needs the compatriot novel to make sense. I would strongly urge anyone who hasn't read her other books to take the plunge. The characters are strong, the mysteries are intriguing, and the love story progresses well over the course of the books.Show Less

    Not really a story

The reading did hold interst. After reading first few emails, which is all the story is, it became boring fast. If it had a better theme to the emails with highs and lows to hold interest it would have become and been an interesting twist on a story.

    Where are the main characters?

I LOVED this series until now. The lead characters I care about have only made cameo appearances as of the first 100 pages. I don't like any of the characters the author is introducing us to. Not sure if I'll finish the book. I should be at least interested in the story by now. Disappointed.

    Book Club Favorite

I have read all of the Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne books in my book club and I love them. As a matter of fact they are a favorite of everyone in the group. I enjoy a good mystery and Julia Spencer-Fleming keeps you in suspence till the very end.
