    Held my interest but...

This book seemed to bounce around a little bit. Not one of his best.

    Just okay

I¿m a Dean Zoontz fan and as such I have to say this was my least favorite of his books. It¿s not a bad book but not good either. The dry wit of the characters was really the only entertaining part for me. Guess I just expected more from this author.

Neat Premise - Too Many One-Liners

The story of Jimmy Tock and his Five Bad Days sounded like a great premise, but Koontz seems to forget his true gift (creating likeable characters) and instead turns out purely cardboard creations, all spouting tired one-liners. This takes us away from the story, and reinforces that these are NOT real people, but base constructs with a mouth to spout Koontz' supposedly hilarious comebacks. Trust me, this guy is not a humorist.

    Horror Humor

Koontz sets us up with a promising premise - a new born is destined to have five, life-threatening days in his lifetime, and the boy's grandfather predicts the 5 dates before he dies at the same time his grandson is born. But, sprinkled in between the action, are stretches of humorous dialogue that I found distracted from the suspense and horror of the story. Also, it is evident that the main character will survive the first four to reach the fifth life-threatening day of reckoning. I recommend this for true Koontz fans, but not for new readers who may be turned-off by the diluted story.
