    the joy factor

I'm sorry but some of my favorite activities in this book¿ Tilting at Windmills and Dickensia, for example¿are the kind LIbrary Journal describes as 'too complicated' and I think their reviewer is just plain wrong. The activities in this book have a delightful joy factor¿usually in the form of Mr. Lithgow's affection for some bit of literature or music or art that is utterly infectious. I don't think there is a activity in this book that is too complicated or too simple¿any reader with just a bit of curiosity and creativity can make their own magic with the ideas presented. And if we're raising kids without curiosity or creative impulse, well, maybe John Lithgow is trying to do something about that! I loved his first palooza book and found that the best way to try a palooza for the first time is to choose one to do with your child. You'll get a bird's eye view of how the activity sets them on the creative journey and you'll have a good gulp of fun yourself. But then leave them to their own devices¿the best part of this book is how you can set them up with the tools for play and then let them do the rest. It's really gratifying to see what happens next.
