This book is a must for any history buff that loves American history from the 1800's particularity the Little Bighorn Battle and Custards Last Stand. This book was thoughtfully crafted with pictures, maps, and diagrams of the battles and is fulled with great stories and has tons of history that would be hard to find elsewhere. I am glad that i purchased this book and look forward to sharing it with some friends!

    Wonderfully descriptive, incredible maps

Little Bighorn Battlefield and Custer's Last Stand by Robert M. Utley is a wonderful, higly detailed, in depth overview of the Little BigHorn Campaign. The maps are my favorite part of this book, really bring the story to life and help understand the plans of action that are told. The first map you see in this book are of the Sioux campaign. You see the movement of Gibbons, Terry-Custer and Crooks and the image in your mind is really brought to life with the addition of the incredible description the campaign. This is just one example within the first few pages of this book. Another thing I really enjoyed about this story is you get both sides of the story, which is often difficult to find in history books. This books sets you up with the setting, vivid imagery and all of the information you could ever need regarding Custer. His Last Stand is well known throughout our history, but in this, you get more than just a list of facts, it adds a personal touch that I found compelling and highly interesting. Little Bighorn Battlefield and Custer's Last Stand would be perfect for teaching purposes, as I said above, the maps are incredible added bonuses and the information is better than what you would normally find in our school's history books. But even if you just want some information on Custer, I would definitely say this one is for you.

    Learned a lot!

I've never read much on the topic of Custer, but I watched a movie the other day that mentioned something of "Custer's last stand", which admittedly, I've heard many times in my life, but seems I've never had the time to devulge into our history like I wish I could. But, with my new Nook in hand, I decided to see if I could find a story on this man, and this is the one I came across. The decription drew me in, and I wanted to see which side of the table I belonged on...the love him or hate him aspect. I'm still not sure, but what I can say is that he was very brave, strong, a loyal soldier, independent and a fierce warrior. This book told me everything, and much more than I expected to learn. Not knowing much about him to begin with aside from the cliche used in movies, I feel like I now have a good grasp on this piece of history. I know about the battle, Custer, himself, as well as new characters for me such as Terry, Crooks and Gibbons who fought alongside him in battle. I've learned about the Sioux and other tribes and the hardships they had to overcome as well. I would really recommend this book for anyone who is beginning to learn about our history or even for someone who already knows a lot because I guarantee this one will tell you things you didn't even know! It's loaded with information, photos and detailed maps. I will definitely be finding more history books by this author as it was easy to follow and the index was really helpful as well.
