I spent a month traveling in China with this guide book. The city maps were not great, but they were the best maps I found in any guide book. When I got back from my trip, someone gave me a hilarious new novel that takes place in China -'Sweet and Sour July'- about a group of tourists making their way from Hong Kong to Beijing and seeing everything in between. I highly recommend both of these books if you are planning a trip to China.

Great buy

Spent 2 weeks touring five cities in China and found this guide quite informative and helpful. I would recommend using local maps, however, instead of the maps in the book for ease of use.

An encyclopedia for travel in China

If you're traveling on your own (as opposed to part of a guided tour) and particularly if you're budget-conscious, you shouldn't leave without this guide. It's simply the most comprehensive guide out there, with tons of well-researched and interesting information on every detail from history and sites to attractions, lodging & meals. If you're not on a budget the excellent DK China is probably your best bet, the illustrations alone are worth the purchase price and if you're panning on getting around by taxi and staying in nicer hotels it has all the information you could ever need. Or, you can do what I did and get both!
