    Great, almost well rounded read

The story has interesting parallels to certain political/historic situations earth as it puts you into the mind of a high tech sort of suicide bomber. The book does present an ambivalent view of the motives of all the characters involved, but does not lose its ultimate moral compass. While the story sometimes can seems somewhat long-winded, at the end, it picks up just the right amount of speed that makes it hard to put the book away. Unlike other books by Banks, the story comes to a, more or less, complete closure, which does not require any lengthy and complicated epilogues and leaves the reader quite satisfied as everything is elegantly resolved.
Overall a great story set in a fascinating background!

A large portion of the book is told in flashbacks, including flashbacks-within-flashbacks. There are even a couple of flash-forwards. It was a little disconcerting at times, trying to piece together the linear story, but well worth the effort. Banks has a flair for entertaining dialog. One entire chapter consists of nothing but dialog at a cocktail party, which had me rolling with laughter.

    The Culture keep getting better

Absolutely brilliant! Great characters, good pace and wildly imaginative. Jumps about a lot but the plot deserves the gradual release of information. It stands alone but I would recommend reading the Culture series in the order that they were written.
