The game of Loteria sets the chapter breaks for the novel and Lu
The game of Loteria sets the chapter breaks for the novel and Luz's story. Just as the game is not one of continuity but of chance, so is Luz's life. Her family is the poster fodder for dysfunctional and to add to the complications, the family is illegal.
In an interview Zambrano was asked when is there too much of a foreign language in a book (lots of Spanish in this novel). He replied that he thought he had found a balance because there was context for the Spanish words and phrases. I disagree. I had no trouble reading and following the story but so much of the Spanish was not, for me, explained in context. Still, I was drawn into the huge task that Luz faces having to remember and tell her sad, tragic story.
