full of surprises, twists and turns

I loved the friendship between Cecily, Regina, Maureen, Anna and Beverly.  The story opens with them at church while in high school and follows them into mid-adulthood.

In the opening, the author paints a very realistic picture of the church and the things that happen in small churches in small towns.  After high school the friends all go on their separate ways getting married, having children and establishing careers. Anna, the shy one of the bunch, happens to get pregnant her senior year of high school by the town star athlete Earl (who folks seem to think has a shot at playing professional ball).  Earl also happens to be the church “star singer” in the choir. The church gets a new pastor in town and his arrival will force all of them to take stock of themselves and their friendships. However, the real action kicks off after one of them is murdered and they converge back on to their small hometown to mourn the loss.

While in the process of mourning the loss of their friend, they find that things are not so cut and dry and black white as it may seems. The secrets that are uncovered have far reaching consequences for another member of the group.

I loved the fact that the author created vivid scenes in the novel. Many times it felt as if I was right there right along with the characters. There are plenty of surprises and twists and turns in this one. I can’t wait to recommend it to my friends.
