    Dame Daphne's My New Hero

I found this book so inspiring. Dame Daphne Sheldrick has spent her life surrounded by the kind of wildlife that most people only encounter in zoos. She has a particular attachment to elephants and became the first person to successfully hand rear a baby after years of trial and error in perfecting a milk formula that baby elephants could digest. But that is only half the battle as many of the infants come to her traumatized by the often brutal death of their mothers and, since they experience grief much like humans do, it takes a tremendous effort to provide them with enough love, encouragement and support so that they can thrive. Unfortunately, with the horrifying increase in poaching, more elephants will be slaughtered for their ivory, leaving behind many more vulnerable babies. This is shameful and must absolutely be stopped. Education is key, especially in the East where ivory is still prized for having restorative powers. While Sheldrick makes all this very clear and conveys a sense of urgency, she never comes across as preachy; rather it's her love and admiration for these magnificent animals that shines through.

    A fabulous story!

I am cheating because my husband is actually the one who read this, but al-ways told me what happened each time he sat down to take it in! I purchased several copies for Christmas gifts, knowing all would thoroughly enjoy this courageous woman's life story.....

Started out slowly with her childhood. Through her story I got a sense of the elements forming Kenya's history and independence. It wasn't until later in the book the conservation of wildlife came into focus. A worthwhile read

A beautiful tale of living life in Africa and the constant struggles a conservationist must face to save the animals that live there. Helps to raise awareness on the past and current poaching of elephants, rhinos, and other species, and also the corruption of the government. A very interesting read about a very pressing issue.
