It's the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, in Canada they refer to that as the "(Anglo-) American War". This year 2 centuries ago American Army troops captured, sacked and burned the city of York (now the beautiful city of Toronto). Canada has responded in revenge by dropping megaton bombs of pretentious junkola from the likes of Justin Bieber and Celine Dion. I heard her new CD being played in a B + N and it's another product for those who like screechy vocals, repeated choruses ad nauseum, clichéd lyrics about - guess what? - romance, love, etc. that seem to have been either dealt out by a random clichéd verse generator or written by 10 year olds. Oh yes, there's the mandatory icky bombastic bloated "artsy-fartsy" Jim Steinman / Meat Loaf -esque production touches. You can find much better quality music for the money in the categories of "romantic", "adult contemporary" or "light rock" or something similar. Check out some Peter Gabriel (1992's "US" is particularly about relationships), some good reggae, some Pink Floyd (calm, mature, unpretentious), Genesis, 80s Steve Winwood, smooth soul and for good Canadian ROCK music you can't fail with this year's inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, RUSH : )
