Almost four years to the date of its last English release and previously one of the top manga properties in America, Loveless returns. Frankly I can’t think of much to make its come back better than this.
The last of the Septimal Moon Chapters are wrapped up with this volume as more tidbits are revealed about the odd organization. Kouga has also been steadily delving more into the history of her characters so it’s great to see more of the past courtesy of Kio’s perspective. And as is true of all the opponents presented in the series, this time a pair named “Bloodless”, the lesson derived deserves a bit of meditation beyond the page. Loveless certainly continues to be an engrossing and complicated trip into a world very unlike, yet still sometimes disturbingly reflective of our own.
Other than one typo over how to make a word that ends in “s” possessive, the quality of the release is very good. Viz, like Loveless’ former English publisher, utilizes color pages as well as the previous translator and editor (now tasked with adaptation). But the biggest difference comes with translated and retouched sound effects, translated Japanese honorifics, and western name order. Romanization is also a little different when it comes to long vowels like in “Kaidou”. Fans may be off put at first encountering “Miss Nagisa” instead of “Nagisa-sensei”, or “The Great Yuri” instead of Yuri-sama. Nor are there any “-tan” or “-chan” attached to names. However, the choice to translate the Japanese text in a full manner is refreshing. I commend Viz for being one of the few publishers to maintain a more professional philosophy when it comes to localizing manga. The suggested age rating has also been revised to Teen 13+ citing “adult situations”. This is largely similar to the main demographic of readers (10-19 years of age) of the Japanese magazine Loveless runs in. Though it is quite obvious that the series has garnered many older readers (myself included) as well. Such lowering of an age rating after several years is not unprecedented. Unfortunately, time will be the only judge on if the series is suited to a slightly younger age group across the ocean than its previous publisher considered.
If you’re a skeptic of Viz Media (myself again) hopefully you’ll be as pleased as I was with this release. And if you’re a new reader to the work of Yun Kouga, then there is no time better than the present to see why her stories are still some of the most enduring years later.

The long-waited continuation of Loveless was well worth the wait! Other then a few translation errors by Viz (such as Kio referring to Soubi as 'Sou' instead of 'Sou-chan', and 'Seven Voices Academy' being translated as 'Seven Stars Academy') I found nothing to dislike about this volume. I am definately going to get volume 10 when it is released. Finally, Yun Kouga is back and as good as ever!
