Given the materials used, I think it is a bit overpriced but it is worth it to me to have the light contained within the cover. Great idea but you need to get a design engineer to actually use the one you have now and improve on it. The binding that holds the cover is too flimsy, needs to be made of material that will prevent it from wiggling and flopping when reading the book. Even when you fold it back and under the Nook it is still aggrevating to hold it. If you read while in bed it is very uncomfortable to hold as when you support it with your left hand your hand/finger/thumb gets irrated as where the Nook clicks in the holder that is a little sharp. The light is great idea but could have a little longer and more adjustment to it so you can try to eliminate glare more. I like the texture and the feel of the cover, looks good. Price is a little high but having light, cover and book all together makes it easy to carry around. I have never seen a clip on light that is good as this one is. I like the 3 LED bulbs, more coverage. I don't know how you could eliminate the glare, but as I said make the shaft a little longer might help. I would buy again however as I like the book, cover and light all together in one configuration. Improve and I'll buy it again.Show Less

Screen glare from led's in every possible position render light useless.

The Lyra Light Cover is a nice idea poorly executed. The front cover has a nice color and feel to it. The Nook snaps easily into place in the back holder. The light folds and stores out of the way. The led's provide plenty of light. So what's the problem? Glare - lots of it, everywhere. The three led's bright white lights reflect back from the screen no matter how you position the light. The stalk the lights are mounted on is not flexible enough to allow you to position the lights in a way that is useful yet not annoying. On top of being useless it is overpriced as well. So back it goes for a refund.

    I Also Recommend:

    Disappointing

I was very disappointed in this cover - I had been looking forward to the built-in light, so it would always be handy and not get lost. I returned this item as soon as I opened it and put it on my Nook. I ended up purchasing a regular cover and separate light.

POSITIVE: Like the feel of the cover. Thin. Doesn't add a lot of thickness or weight to Nook. Built-in light.

NEGATIVES: the hinge is VERY flimsy. Cover flopped around. Doesn't protect back of Nook. Light is not very flexible - in the way of reading when in use.

I would really like to see one of the other types of cover get a built-in light.

Light is great - the binding is awful

My sister gave this to me because she was so disappointed with the product and BN wouldn't take it back (because the package was opened). The light function, I love. I love how it tucks away on the side, though the glare can be an issue. However, the binding is a flimsy elastic band. When I'm holding the Nook, the cover is always eschew, which is annoying. I would also prefer a back cover, but that's a minor point. The cover is certainly not worth $50.

    I Also Recommend:

The designer had good intentions, but it just didn't work out.

I purchased this cover because 1) I liked how the light was built in, and 2) I wanted my colored nook back to show and not be hidden by the nook cover.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was the flimsiness of the spine area - when the back is flipped behind the nook (for reading) the cover does not align well with the device. I found myself constantly adjusting the alignment or increasing my grip to keep the 2 pieces aligned - very annoying and distracting. I considered using velcro on the back of the nook and front of the cover to get them to line up when I'm reading, and also thought about glueing a magnetic snap for the same effect. Both solutions seemed aesthetically ugly and I really didn't want to start modifying my $50 cover, in fear that my mods would not work and I would deface the cover permanently.

As soon as the evening grew dark, I quickly snuggled up with my nook and new lighted cover - anxious to try the light. To my disappointment, the light is not flexible enough to move to a spot that is not blocking my view of the words. I found myself constantly adjusting the position of the nook to look under and over the light. :-( The glare of the light was unbearable, too, and further limited my view of the words.

Needless to say, I exchanged this cover for another. I chose the Industriell front cover and a seperate Nook light - which left me with an $11 credit to my account. Now I'm a happy little clam with the perfect cover and a light that's infinitely flexible and compact enough to take anywhere.

In summary, before you buy this cover, I recommend trying it in the store with your nook to see how it feels in your hands, and make note of the terrible light position. Consider purchasing the Industriel front cover (same style but not light and better binding) and a seperate light in lieu of this one. I've linked to these products from this review.

    Hope this helps! :-)

    Glad I got it.

I disagree with the most common complaint, the hinge. I find the hinge to be well-made of a heavy duty canvas-type fabric and without the flexibility, would be more apt to rip or tear from the cover. I love the feel of cover, a non-slip "cushiony" material that does not fatigue my hands. The drawback is the light itself, which I find to be a bit bothersome with glare. I am constantly trying to tilt the arm further than it can go to reduce the glare.

    Good protection, light is nice

My wife bought this (and the Nook) for me just before I headed to Afghanistan. I use it almost everyday. At first the hinge and the light bothered me but I have gotten used to it. For the glare I just bring the light straight up and not fold it over the page and it works fine. If you fold the cover under the Nook and hold on to both then it is ok. The light is still very bright after almost a month and a half of use. I would recommend this over a seperate case and light combo because it is always available and because you have to fold it down to close it you will never accidentally leave it on.

I am so disappointed in the Lyra Light Front Cover!

I remember how excited I was when I walked into my local Barnes and Noble store and learned about the Nook. I am a long time member, an avid reader and was delighted that I could enjoy the benefits of my passion for reading using such wonderful technology. One of the biggest selling points for me was the fact that I could hold the Nook just like a book and that I could read it anywhere - at home, at lunch, at the beach, and I could evan have a light for reading in the dark. I purchased the 3G model and couldn't wait to give it a try.

Then, I found that my store did not have the Lyra Light Front Cover that I needed in stock and it was suggested that I order one online because they were not sure when another shipment would be coming. So, I excitedly ordered my new cover. It arrived in a timely manner and, with great expectency I snapped it into place.

This is when my disappointments began. I opened the cover and the front cover was not like a "real" book cover at all. It flopped about and was so distracting and cumbersome that I finally turned it to the back side of the Nook thus negating the reason I purchased the cover in the first place. I was now the owner of a very expensive book light. My dissappontments did not stop there. I had an opportunity to try using the light (its one redeeming quality) and found that there was such a glare that I was constantly repositioning the holder in order to read. No matter how many times I tried, I was not able to find a "non-glare" position. Finally, I put the Nook with its cover in my oversized purse and, because it had no snaps or straps to keep it closed, when I removed it there were small pieces of paper inside touching and probably marring the screen.
As it stands at this time, I am the owner of an expensive and yet useless hard cover for my Nook. I remain extremely disappointed.

This is a more than decent cover/light!

I really like the aesthetics of this cover/light. The articulation of the light bar is really sleek. I am not overly concerned about the fabric hinge. The fabric could have been thicker, but I do understand why they used fabric. I have a Kindle in a leather case and when I fold it back to read it feels like the case is fighting against me to hold it! Folded leather wrinkles badly and will eventually crack! I gave this cover/light a 4 because they should have affixed some sort of band to hold it in place when closed. Other than that, I really like it!

    Nice, but way overpriced!

I had been trying to get the Lyra light every since I received a nook for Christmas 2009 so it was with no small measure of excitement that after seemingly endless delays I finally received it on May 21st 2010, 6 month after it was ordered. I must admit I am a bit disappointed with what I received. First off, the packaging is very sturdy (as we have come to expect after trying to un-box the nook!)with a sleek look. Once I finally broached into the actual compartment which holds the Lyra my first though was, "This is it?!?!?". It is not an actual full case but a cover on a fabric hinge, and a 1/3rd of a back, plastic battery holder that clips onto the nook. Thus the back of your nook is completely exposed with no protection offered by the "case". On the plus side the actual light (2 AAA batteries, not included. Come on people! Fifty bucks and you cannot come up off of a couple of AAAs???) is bright and fully illuminate the screen, but can give you some glare causing frequent adjustments. I do like the fact that soon as you stow the light it automatically turns off. The light is articulated fairly well and adjusts easily for reading. So, in a nutshell, for thirty bucks this would be a must buy, but for fifty......wait till it is on sale!!!

    Positives:
    Bright light
    Easily articulated light arm
    Automatic light shut off
Combines a case and light in one compact package
    Great for "on the go"
    Slick packaging

    Negatives:
VERY expensive for what you get
Does not cover the entire nook (leaves back exposed)
Can place glare on the screen
Needs heavy duty shears or the Jaws of Life to open the box

    UPDATE:6/14/2010
I wanted to do a quick update since I have had several weeks now with this case.....er......front. I didn't mention in my original review that the front cover does have a magnet so it stays close fairly well when your nook is not in use. Some people have commented on how heavy it is but that has never really bothered me during my many excursions out and about. So all in all I will stick with my original assessment. For twenty five or thirty bucks it would be worth it. But for fifty, not so much.

    Good light, poor placement.

The cover is of good quality and protects the front of the Nook. The light is nice and bright. The placement or direction of application of the light is poor, it is extreamely difficult to not have glare from the light.

    Still deciding!

Let's start with the dimensions. It is 8.1" x 5.14" x 3/4". The 3/4" is on the battery and light side. The other side of the nook and cover is 1/2" thick.
The battery / light side makes a nice handle where it curves back even with the back of the nook. It gives you a firm grip where my Industrial easel does not. So far, when I fold the cover back and hold my nook to read, it feels as though it is cramping my hand. Maybe I just need to get used to the feel of it.
The top cover, when it is in the closed position, is slightly curved to fit over the battery/light compartment This looks very good and trim. This also contributes to the good grip when it is closed, but this is what I am not really sure that I like about it. When you fold the cover back behind the nook, it is curved inward and it is not very comfortable to hold. The curved edge pushes up against the middle of your fingers, and then the nook rests on your fingertips. It is hard to explain, but maybe I will get used to it.
The light itself is very good! When you pull it out of its pocket, it automatically turns on, when you push it back in firmly, it shuts off. You can bend it across the top and it lights up all the way down. The top can be rotated to shine lower. I had purchased a booklight, but when my husband was driving at night, it was too distracting. On this light, if you lift the arm straight up partway and not rotate the light, it shines only toward the nook, not toward someone on your left side, like the driver or a fellow passenger on a plane.
I gave it a 4 star because I am not for sure about the comfort yet. I do not have arthritis myself, but I do have a sister that has problems with her hands. I don't know if I would recommend it for someone that does have this problem. When I get a chance, I will have my sister see what she thinks of it and I will pass it on. Most of the time, I have my nook laying in my lap, so I don't know if this will really be a problem or not. I think in bed though, I will mostly be holding it.
What do others think, am I being to picky? I would give the light a 5 star, though! It is very easy to insert the nook. The back is not completely protected. It has "nook" formed into the lower right hand corner. It looks very neat. The front and back is connected with a strip of strong binding material. Again, when the cover is closed, it gives you a very good grip on the nook. It is when the cover is open that I am not very comfortable with it.

Finally received it, and I love it!

I, like many others, ordered the lyra light cover for Nook back in January and waited impatiently for delivery. I received mine yesterday, and I am very pleased with it!

First, let me alert those who have yet to buy/receive this light cover that the packaging is easy to open...once you find the proper method. I too was going to cut into the packaging with shears until my husband noticed an almost invisible diagonal line on one corner. He bent the corner at the line and was able to easily pull off the upper packaging.

Second, I already knew that the lyra light cover did not have a back to it. I am not bothered by this at all. In fact, it makes the cover more streamlined.

Finally, the light is really great! I like the way it turns on and off. The angles you can get are also wonderful. I used the light last night until I finally got too tired to read.

The only reason I didn't give the cover 5 stars is because it's adds a little weight because of the batteries, but overall--Great product!

    GREENER GRASS

We just got the nook. So far it is great- However, the Lyra case w/ the light leaves me thinking; "I wonder if I can make one of the Kindle cases work?" They have a great selection of nice looking leather cases for around $40 (not $130)and then a slide in light for $24. Which is sleek & nice looking and it only requires one AAA battery for those so worried about weight. Yes that is more than the Lyra case when added up. The difference is there is many cases that work w/ the light & it is a true case, "not just a cover" so it protects theback of the device as well. Hopefully there will be more options available when it comes to a case with a light, or even a light that is not a bulky clip on that looks cheap & silly attached to a nice thin stylish ereader. Check out the M-Edge e-Luminator2 - just a thought.

Nice but would really like a back cover....

I just paid $50 for this cover. Had to have it because of the built in light. Opened the package and thought I was getting punked. Tore the package apart looking for the back cover. Can't believe they charged so much for the front cover only. Will go buy the protective skin for the back. I think Barnes and Noble could have done better.

    Very poor design

While i'm grateful that my friend spent 50$ for this gift, I must say that this cover is barely usable. The awkward think cannot hold steady in your hand when you read because of the binding (see on the picture, the binding covers only about 60% of the left margin). This is a major flaw. The light increase the glare, but it is possible to work around that. The cover, once closed, nicely protects the nook. Bottom line : very expensive (a third of the price of the nook ) and very annoying to use. Frustrating.

    Great Convenient Cover

I've had my Nook and Lyra Light Cover about 3 weeks now; and although on a learning curve with my Nook, I absolutely love the cover. The idea of not toting around a separate light (which I am prone to forget) sold me on this cover. For those complaining of the front cover and hinge being flimsy, it is totally easy to read with the cover to the back of the Nook and pushed all the way to the left thereby giving you a very sturdy comfortable grip. In my opinion, this cover was not designed to just be opened and left hanging! As for the light, I don't seem to be having any of the previously mentioned issues regarding glare or not lighting the entire page. All in all, I am very satisfied with this cover (except for the price, that is!)

Great idea but the back is not protected should get rear cover in gravel if your back panel is white, but total spent is too pricey

Love that the light is easily accessible and the glare does not bother me in the position i use to read so thats the great but ive only has this nook for a few weeks and already the back of my nook has gone through some wear because this cover only covers the front which it does protect the front well and i like that you can fold it back, it is very comfortable to hold. But This cover is expensive already now i spent another 20 bucks to get a signature rear cover in gravel to protect the back, not worth it. Rather get the lyra light that attaches to the nook and a separate cover that cover both front and back. Its way cheaper and that is what my sister did and she's had her nook since Feb and her looks brand new compare to mine which ive only had for two weeks and the white back is ruined already. However i do love my wifi only nook.

    Love the built in light

I am so glad I purchased this cover with my nook. It in not a bulky as many of the other covers, protects what needs to be protected (the screen), and fits easily in a handbag. With the built in light, I can read easily anywhere, any time. The only thing I would change would be the color. I would have loved this even more if it had a more exciting color.
