Just okay
I love Betty Smith's books so I expected to love this one also. I didn't. The writing of course was great, it was the story and characters that weren't. I just couldn't stand the choices that Maggie was making. It was hard to understand why she loved Claude and why she continued to love him and put up with him. She really didn't even know him. No one else in the book liked him either. Her devotion to him was actually quite pathetic. There really weren't any likable charaters in this book.
