Definitive Digital B/W Guidebook
Michael Freeman remains one of the more worthwhile writers on the subject of digital photography today. His presentation is readable and informative, and his books are of a usable scope, not trying to be all things to all readers as so many in the space tend to do. This is one of the more up-to-date references on shooting and editing digital B/W photos. The subject matter is presented in a well organized fashion. Mr. Freeman gives a great background on the behavior of light and color, and does a comendable job of explaining the skill of 'seeing' in B/W. The real value of this book is in the detailed explanations of managing your image workflow for B/W. His explanation of techniques for converting color images to B/W is one of the best I've read, and he does equal justice to traditional topics such as exposure, tone, high-key/low-key. He translates traditional B/W print techniques clearly into the digital darkroom, with discussions of dodging, burning, and contrast management. The only place this book falls short (as have all books to date on this subject) is that of printing B/W images in a digital workflow. While he covers the basics, too little is said about the limitations of current ink jet technology, or the available alternatives for those wanting to create digital fine art prints. But again, that is almost an entirely separate subject and probably does fall somewhat outside the scope of this excellent book. ----- Highly recommended for serious beginners, amateurs, and professionals new to the subject.
