If you want to master it - THIS IS YOUR BOOK!
I am a musician. I was "stuck" several years ago and needed a breakthrough. MASTERY provided the necessary tools for that breakthrough. It's principles continue to guide me, especially when I feel that I'm not progressing as quickly as I should. I have recommended this book to several people and have given copies to graduating seniors. Thank you Mr. Leonard for sharing your wisdom.

Get some new determination in your life
This book helps you touch in with who you are and where you are going. Great methods for determining, setting and achieving your goals. Quick read (I've read it twice and gifted it three times).

As current for the times in '92, as it is now, in '09. Will we ever learn?
IN a prior reading there was a short excerpt from this book. Wanted to read more. Glad I did.

George Leonard published the book in '92 and, again, it is yet another book written in another time (just after the S&L debacle) which is as current now as it was then.
Mr. Leonard, a martial arts expert, discusses how today's America seems to reject the notion of mastery, looks at it for what it is, and discusses ways for each of us to get on the path toward mastery ourselves.
A key theme that I agree with, America has become too expectant of repetitive climactic moments, of immediate gratification (e.g. why work, 'I can win the lottery' ads). It cannot be maintained. Continual work on the path toward mastery, toward -long term- execution, is a must.
You can read my blog post after having completed the book, at www.jtpedersen.net. -

Homeostasis.....
Great book! I found a lot of interesting concepts in here including the concept of homeostasis (forgot about that one from Biology!), how the body eventually will automatically always return to its original state as a way of protecting itself and how that also applies to the mind. The topic of practice and muscle memory and why you need to practice over and over before your muscle memory kicks in to do a particular task before it becomes second nature. And the discussion on how America has become a society of immediate gratification, without the benefit of practice, commitment and mastery, the values that are lost in this lifestyle. The author discusses learning to love the practice and finding peace and satisfaction in your daily life.

If it is good for Brian Buffini it is good for me!
Great lessons to move from success to significance and from survival to success. This book demystifies our quick fix society and replaces it with good hard specific action steps practices over the long haul.

Excellent
This is an excellent book! I have been spending years trying to find the keys to a happy and succcessful life and I can confidently say that this book gave me some valuable insights. I truly recommend this book. I also liked Rhythm, Relationships, and Transcendence by Toru Sato. It is also a fascinating book on this topic!

A brilliant take on the subject of Zen in the Art of Life
George Leonard's 'Mastery' brings to light the philosophy of the Far East residing in the realm of aikido and shows the way this philosphy can be applied to all aspects of life. He sums up the 'path of mastery' in one simple word, practice, as well as the love of practice for its own sake.
