I know Why the Caged Bird Sings is an inspiring true story of a young african american girl and her brother who experience so much due to the divorce of their parents. The important characters in this novel are Momma, mother Vivian, Big Bailey, Maya and Bailey. This book captures the reader's eye by incorporating various of conflicts throughout the novel. For example, the sexual abuse Maya went through when Mr. Freeman(mother Vivian’s husband during the beginning of the story) rapes her in a violently manner that she becomes ill and is taken to the hospital. Another conflict was when Maya spent a summer with Big Bailey and ends up getting stabbed with scissors by Big Bailey’s wife Dolores and so on. What standed out the most for me was the sincerity of her narration and the trust she had in her readers when telling her life story. I liked the last chapter because it shows the innocence or lack of information Maya has when confusing lesbian with hermaphrodite. This novel reminds me how one can overcome any obstacle no matter where you came from or from whom. I didn’t like the part when Maya offered herself to a boy in block just to get rid of a curiosity she had. I recommend this book to those who love to read about struggles yet overcoming them and the truth of the experiences of african american discrimination. I don’t recommend it to readers who like a book that has a overall elated plot.
