Brynn is a poor college student struggling to get by. When she sees a man sitting on a bench on campus in the snow, she buys him a cup of coffee to warm him up. A few chance meetings later and Brynn has developed a rather big crush on the stranger until she finds out he is a professor in charge of a coveted program she is applying for. Elliot has been reclusive since a car accident in Hungary ten years ago. When a young woman buys him coffee he starts to realize that he doesn’t need to hide from life, he needs to live it.

I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this story. Brynn was a smart college student that has been dealt a lot of harsh blows in her young life. I liked how strong and grounded she was. She didn’t let all the bad stuff in her life beat her down. She is very intelligent and is able to focus on her school work even when her personal life isn’t going the way she wants. Elliot, on the other hand, was beat down by life. He was wallowing in events that happened in the past and he couldn’t seem to let it go. His work was even suffering from it since he didn’t feel he deserved to be successful or even happy. I would have liked him to snap out of it a little sooner. He was very much the tortured hero.

This book is written in a mixture of Brynn’s first person narrative and Elliot’s third person. Brynn has a lot of self doubt that we can see is a result of her father’s apathy towards her for most of her life. It was good to see things from Elliot’s perspective as well. When he is gruff or seemingly rude we can see how he is struggling to accept that he can be happy.

I would have liked more about Brynn’s grandmother. She is barely mentioned but as she was from Hungary and Brynn lived with her I would have thought she would have tried Hungarian food and/or spoke some of the language. I thought it was unlikely that an older woman that came to America to take care of her granddaughter wouldn’t share some of her culture.

One big complaint I have is how this story is left with a happy for the moment ending. When I got to the end I found out it would have a sequel so the story isn’t over yet. I am really tired of this trend of not getting the whole story when I sit down to read a book. I liked how the book ended, don’t get me wrong, but we have a lot of unanswered questions about what Brynn and Elliot will do. I will probably read the sequel but I don’t like feeling like I have to in order to get the complete story.

I loved this book. It had so much going on, so many emotions, and this is a true love story.

This is the first book of this kind that I have read by Aubrey, but it truly speaks to her talent for being able to write awesome romances across the genres.

I can't wait to read the next book, Broken Prince!
