Compelling and heartbreaking

This is an incredible story, that is narrarated by an 8-year old girl. As you read it you really believe that a little girl is telling you this story. This story is absolutely heartbreaking at times, but it is beautifully told. The ending is quite a surprise. An inc...

I have read many, many sad books - both fiction and non-fiction. However, this book has so disturbed me that I cannot finish it. I can't say that the writing is bad, because it is not. Maybe it's the fact that the author makes these characters so real that makes it difficult to read....I don't know. Based on the other reviews, I believe I have the end figured out. But it's just too gut-wrenching to finish......Sorry......

    Not so great.

Not sure why everyone is raving about this book. Definately not one I would recommend. However, the end had a good twist.

    Sad tragic book

I was very disappointed after reading this book. It does have some surprise in the story line but I am tired of reading books about childhood abuse with no adults taking responsibility for their actions. I could watch the evening news and get just as depressed.

    Too depressing...

Carrie's life is in a word wretched. At school, she is virtually friendless, but when she goes home her mother is drunk and her step father abusive, mentally and physically. All she really has is memories of her father and the company of her baby sister, Emma. Attempting to run away only makes things worse. Then, the family moves to start over, but things are no better. Although Carrie makes a few friends, life is still bleak and bloody. It all changes in one horrible moment that will steal away even the feeble comfort Carrie does have. ............................... * This is a frankly depressing read. The end twist reveals the depths to which our minds will go to protect us, and is rather startling, but the levels of abuse suffered by an innocent child twist the heart and gut so severely that even the expert writing can not recommend this book. *
