    Very highly recommended.

There are so many high points to this book it is difficult to describe them all. The craftsmanship the author has poured into Melody and the Pier to Forever is evident from the first page to the last. Although some may be daunted by its epic scope, one becomes totally immersed in the careful character development and begins to adore Melody, Maggie, Yaeko, Aedan and a host of other characters.
The time flies by and before you know it, you've reached the end and hunger for more.
A truly marvelous novel, one that should be recognized by all the awards one could heap on a work of this scope. Mister Montaigne is truly the Tolkien of our era.

    Awesome Epic Nautical Fantasy!

I took advantage of the offer to read the first five parts of this book free and Melody and the Pier to Forever quickly ascended to the top of my list of favourite genre books. I bought this novel on Smashwords, but I'm thrilled to see B&N is finally carrying it, so I wanted to share my enthusiasm here as well. So you know what I like, my favourite noevls and series are epic fantasy and sci fi sagas like Dune, His Dark Materials, Hyperion, and Winter of the World. Melody and the Pier to Forever has all the scope of these books and a great ensemble cast. I don't know who I'm most fascinated with ... the quiet teenage girl who turns out to be a powerful mage called a Mathematician, her best friend who's really an angel who can travel between worlds, or the exiled king Conor who broke all allegiances to rise up against a tyrant. Perhaps my favourite character of all is Maggie. At the start of our book, Maggie is a single mom living in the suburbs, and afraid of everything and everyone. By the end of this first book, she has witnessed the destruction of an entire world, a heroic uprising against a soul-eating monster, and the rise of a terrible empire. She emerges from all of this ready to do whatever it takes to defeat that evil. This book is really about people finding themselves within the context of an epic fantasy adventure. This book ends on a major cliffhanger, but to my understanding it is the first of a trilogy. You will also like this book if like me you are a fan of mythopoetic writers like CS Lewis, George Macdonald, Charles Williams, JRR Tolkien, etc. There is a lot of philosophy and metaphysics in this book, which just makes it even more awesome! If you dig nautical stuff too, this is a great book featuring ships and sea battles. There is something for everyone here--if you like action and adventure, you'll find plenty of it, if you like character driven novels, this is one the best there is. Download it today, you won't regret it! Sadly this author has only written one other book so far, and I already devoured it!

I have recommended this to all my friends!

I still cannot believe this was a free book. It is almost an odyssey instead of a novel. As I was reading this I found myself wondering how it would play out on the big screen, it is that good!

    Loved it

Good long read. Now I have to get the rest of the story. Not just for young readers. Full of culture politics and relationships.

    EPIC STORY!!!

First of all, I want more!!!! This novel, or should I say, massive tale grips you from the start. What does a storm, a few notes of music, a thirteen year old girl and her mother, a child prodigy and a Math teacher have in common. Nothing at first. Then the story enfolds to create this saga that takes you on a voyage of exploration and discovery. The twists and turns keeps you engrossed, not wanting to stop reading until the very end. Then you only want more, NOW! I cannot imagine how long it took this author to create this story, or the next one, and the one after that. You have me hooked. I will be waiting for the next installment of Melody's journeys.

    Don't pass this one up

What a wonderful BIG story this was. A thoroughly enjoyable fantasy with so much to recommend it. Action, adventure, drama, magic and great love. I particularly liked the mystical relationship between Melody and Yaeko. And Yaeko... without giving too much away, I'll just say her story is very moving. The characters are fully developed, with human frailties and human strengths. Like me, I know that you will love them all.( I have to single out The Healer Luis, though, just because of how often I found myself smiling and nodding at his political observations.) Another point I'd make it that this book is appropriate and enjoyable for all ages. Do yourself a favor and get this one. I can't imagine why it's free, but it is. So grab it! You won't regret it.

Unknown author - but probably not for long

Every now and again I find a hidden gem like this, and I almost want to keep it to myself, because I feel like I've discovered something special and secret - but that wouldn't be fair, to the author or to everybody else.

One of the best things about ebooks is that I get to read relatively unknown authors. Only RARELY do I find one this good. I really see no reason why Shawn Montaigne shouldn't be placed in the same hall of fame as some of my other fantasy favorites like Tolkien or Robert Jordan or Tad Williams. This book has the same level of detail and depth, and the same kind of character development. Does it have its imperfections? Of course. This appears to be a first novel - too bad I can't find anything much out about the author. The novel starts out strong, but it only gets better and better, and the end is just outstanding. I'd have given it 5 stars if the whole thing had been on that level, but in some ways maybe the development of the prose is a good indicator of what I can expect in book 2 (just like to know *when* I can expect book 2).

Great first book. This guy's writing is sure to be even more outstanding in the next novel. And I'm eagerly waiting for it.

(Oh yeah, did I mention this book starts out in my hometown? You don't see that often!)

    Very Exciting and Original!

Wow ... this book packs a lot of action, considering its rather subtle beginning. It really builds up over the course of five parts though, and what starts as a story about a teenage girl with some problems in school and a mysterious ability transforms into a swashbuckling adventure story of naval warfare, magick, and mayhem! It ends on a serious cliffhanger though. Hurry up and write book 2!!
