Lots of data but not much useful information

This book was very frustrating to use. We had to travel the entire the lenght of the Alaskan Highway and continue the same road down into the US through North Dakota. The book never seemed to have the information we needed to help us travel along the Alaskan Highway. Because it contained information on so many different routes, the index was pretty useless if you didn't know the road well. If you knew the road that well, why would you need the book. I would recommed that you review the book first in the store and decide if it will meet your needs. It simply doesn't cover all the information needs when traveling unfamiliar routes through Canada.

    Milepost 2009

Anyone traveling the roads into or out of Alaska needs this guide. Due to the remoteness of some of the areas, the comprehensive info on accomodations, food, and fuel are a must. Also enjoyable is the host of information about the terrain, wildlife, population centers, etc. It helps to have a "navigator" in the vehicle to read as you travel along.
The format can be difficult but once you locate where you are on a highway and which direction you are traveling (the information works for going both north and south), it all falls into place.

    NEEDS TO BE UPDATED

I don't know when the publicatons staff checked the information on hotels, etc. Surely they must know in these hard economic times that businesses fail - we found hotels closed or for sale, gas stations closed or for sale, etc. it went on and on.

Please be aware that usa pay as you go phones like tracphone do not work in canada.

I agree with another poster to rely on your gps device. We were unlucky that the latest update to our garmin turned it into a brick - and was unusable.

    Milepost was very accurate!

Milepost proved to be invaluable for our trip to Alaska. We went by motorhome, the trip was put together rather quickly, and this book was recommended to us by friends who had also made the journey a couple years ago, we called it our travel bible! We came to depend on it daily! A must for travel by vehicle.

I you have a GPS, DO NOT BUY!

I bought this book because I was traveling the entire length of the ALCAN from Dawson Creek, BC to Fairbanks, AK. Everyone I talked to said it was a necessity. I have a Garmin GPS, and only opened the book once. It was like trying to read a phonebook that wasn't alphabetically ordered. It is extremely hard to read and it isn't even accurate. At one point, I looked up where I could find the next lodging facilities. The milepost said the next hotel would be in 156 miles....I was stopped under a billboard for a Best Western less than 5 miles away in my direction of travel! The only redeeming characteristic this book has is a map of western Canada and Alaska which you can use to plan stops, but other than that, the GPS took care of all gas/food/lodging needs, which end up being located pretty much every 100 miles of the trip. I feel like I was duped into buying this piece of junk by everyone who tries to make the trip seem impossible without it. The ALCAN is no big deal. I would not recommend this book to anyone who can read roadsigns and set their trip odometer. By the way, this was my first trip on the ALCAN, and I do not do much road-tripping. Anyone can drive the ALCAN in just about any vehicle (I even saw a smart-car near Fort Nelson).

The Milepost- (A Great Alaska Highway Guide)

We have purchased this publication many times over the last 10 years. It is a great guide for anyone traveling along the AlCan/Alaskan Highway (which begins in Dawson Creek, BC, Canada and ends at Delta Junction, AK, USA). The Milepost also gives info on other intersecting roads and highways in British Columbia, The Yukon, and Alaska. My husband and I have driven this route and you can sometimes drive quite a ways without seeing any services (gas, food, etc)....this is where this guide is a great help so that you do not find yourself stranded. The Milepost also gives background and history on many of the towns, museums, sites, etc along the way. The Milepost is a AAA Guidebook on steroids....so much info that you will have so many things that you want to do and not enough time to do it in!!!
