This is the updated version of “Million Dollar Outlines”, which has been expanded and revised. The book is actually a text version of a class Farland teaches, and having read this book before actually taking the class I will say it is very faithful to the material. Dave Farland is an incredible teacher and has a real gift for explaining complex ideas and techniques in easy to digest chunks. There were quite a few a-ha moments for me when things my writing teachers have told me for years were finally laid out and explained in such a way that I could analyze and start using them. The main focus of this book is outlining and crafting a story with the types of twists and turns that mainstream audiences will love. There are several great examples from modern day works, and Farland is able to distill a lot of what he is teaching down into a few really good examples to help you understand his techniques. There are a few stumbling blocks, as with any book on writing, and readers may not find everything immediately applicable. For example, I was a bit intimidated by Dave's outlining style at first, and almost completely dismissed it until I say down and figured out a way I could use it, even if by subset. That’s where the examples in this book shine. Throughout, Dave helps you understand what needs to be done to craft great outlines and stories that sell, regardless of your personal style. This book, along with his companion book "Drawing on the Power of Resonance in Writing," come highly recommended and should be on every writer's digital bookshelf.
