Comfort food for the soul!
I have a book a day SF&F habit and this is still my all time favorite. It's so long out of print it is hard to find but definitely worth searching for. It's funny, warm, clever, and leaves you happier than you were before you picked it up. The protagonist is a 3rd generation colonist on an Earth like planet. It's not the wild west- it's the sparcely populated west where humans are an endangered species and everyone has to cooperate to survive when their new world is still full of surprises. Annie is a mature woman with a grown up perspective (so refreshing!) a challenging career in "wildlife management" and enjoys scandalizing the teenyboppers by necking with her man in the backseat of the hover car. Every character is unique and the critters are truly inspired from the carniverous Kangaroo Rex to the hilarious Lock Moose Monster. I had to quit loaning this book out because it is so hard to find and the loaners were never returned- a sure sign of a great book.
