I am an African American college sophomore attending a predominately Euro-American private college. I was looking for a novel that had the story of a black woman taking charge of her world and actively changing it without the intervention of a romantic interest.
I chose this book because of the interesting 70s motif, the cute title and the interesting synopsis sounded close to what I was looking for.
I was disappointed because 8/9ths of the book is about the young girl being abused emotionally by her father, the pain of the abandonment of her mother, sexual molestation accounts and the physical abuse of both of her parents. All around, she is very much neglected and disrespected. The end is 2 pages about her successful life as an adult. That made this book seemed like it was written in a hurry. Its VERY elementary writing. Which makes it easier to understand, but the authors style is nonexistent.
I would not recommend this book if you are looking for what I am. Again, I am left to feel terrible about being a single black woman.
