This children's book is not just for children.

Miss Rumphius is a book that can span the ages in its message of a life lived to its most fulfilling, experiencing the highs and lows, leaving a legacy for those who follow. I fell in love with this book when I read it to my children, and now I have fallen in love with it again reading it to my grandaughter. The message here is very subtle; what seems to be an innocent story of a young child, growing up and growing old, following her dreams, is actually, in the planting of the lupines, a metaphor for the true meaning of a life fulfilled. This is a "green" story that will leave you feeling good and wondering about the legacy you can leave behind. I rate it 5 stars!

One of the best books ever

I read this book hundreds of thousands times to my sons and give it to every new baby I know.

I just gave a new copy of it to my eldest as he gets ready to graduate from college.

Beautiful illustrations, wonderful story, great life lesson.

    Such a sweet story!

The flowers remind me of Texas Bluebonnets. Love the pictures! Cooney does such wonderful work in all the books I've seen her illustrate. Another favorite she illustrated is the Ox-Cart Man.

    Beautiful all around

Miss Rumphius is a beautiful story with beautiful illustrations. My 3 and 4 year-olds love it. I like that it is one of the few stories about the full and purposeful life of a woman who does not marry or have children. Yet, she shares her life with children and makes their world more beautiful.

My Mother read this to me often as a child myself. Now it is a staple in my mothering. It is a lovely and subtle way to show how taking interest in family, travel, natural beauty and doing good can be rewarding and even help pull you through hard times. A must have for any age.

    a must read

this is one of the most beautiful books i have ever read (and as an english major and obsessive reader that is no small feat!) and i give it to every special child in my life. it has an incredible message and quiet feminist undertones. i have never made it through the last page without getting choked up.

    Discovered favorite as an adult

I first read this book with third graders, as a teacher's aide in the classroom. I absolutely loved it because it was a bout a woman who had a full rich life. A great book for teaching children about living life richly.

    I love this book!!!

I am 21 years old and I can still remember the positive message that Miss Rumphius gave me as a child. I remember that after I read it, I vowed that I would ultimately do something in my life to make this world a better place. Years later, I cannot believe how much this book has influenced me in my life. I can still smell the wonderful scents of Miss Rumphius flowers and her seaside home.
