The Man Speaks
Joe McNally has certainly established himself as one of the top dogs and well deserved. The Moment It Clicks is different from any other photo "how to" book I have seen. At first glance you might not see the real specific teaching points. They are not laid out in plain formulas or charts. Rather, throughout the book he gives hints on things like the delicate use of fill lights and balancing your lighting color, making due with what is available on site and getting the best in a often imperfect photo situations. Stuff only a well experienced photographer could share.
His writing is entertaining and colorful. The insider details are hilarious and a real eye opener to the world of professional photography. This is not a "picture book" or a step by step "how to" book, but you will learn the subtle techniques that can make an average image much better.2 out of 3 people found this review helpful.

Buy This Book...Now!
If you don't know who Joe McNally is, you will after you read this book. You probably have seen his photos in National Geographic and other major magazines over the years. Now is your chance to find out how these photos came about, the back story behind them and how they were shot. Don't expect 'this is how to duplicate this shot and sell it for a profit' advice. Joe gives you the big picture and some of the details regarding the shot. He expects you to learn from what he gives you and apply it to your own photography. Now, you say you are not a photographer or at least not a serious photographer? Even more reason to buy this book. Not only will you enjoy the beautiful imagery, but you will begin to understand that these shots did not just happen. Even my wife, who generally hates photography books, could not put this book down. Buy this book and you will not regret spending the money, its well worth the relatively high price once you get over the sticker shock.

What are you waiting for ? Buy this NOW!
I have a new hero. His name is McNally. Joe McNally. I stood in the aisle and leafed through this book. Stole an idea, used it on a shoot that night. Saw the price and put the book back on the shelf, unflagged. Bought the book the next day. Felt guilty. Stealing is bad. Subsequently, found Joe is one of the most informative and entertaining authors on the planet. Each subject has the problem and the solution. He even credits his hard bitten bosses for his success. Worth the price alone is the quote 'do the reshoot while you are still there.' Thanks Joe.

Must have for all photographers
This book is outstanding. As a self taught professional, I'm always looking for 'how I took the shot' books. Combine the fact that Joe McNally is one of the finest photographers in the business, and is also able to explain the way in which he shot each photo, in simple, but descriptive detail, makes it a great read for all photographers. I also agree that it is perfectly suitable as a coffee table book. The photographs are amazing and anyone, even non photographers, would love looking at this book. My hopes are that there will be more books of this quality published. It's more than just a book with beautiful photos. I'll enjoy looking at this book many, many times.

Excellent How-To Book
This is a must read for anyone who wants to; shoot flash mixed with ambient light; wants insight into professional shoots; wants to get the creative juices flowing; wants to take photography to a whole new level; wants to do location shoots without 15 cases of equipment. This was Joe's first book so some of the info revolves around film and older technology. Regardless, this book covers the creative thought process, logistics, and the actual shoot which allows readers to follow the dots to create their own images. Joe is truly an artist who has allowed technology to help create better images and push the envelope on what is possible.

Great for all levels
This book is not a guide nor something that tells you specifically how to do something. Having read this after reading several other books it made sense to me, but may not for someone just getting into photography. Highly recommended though as it will give insight as to what being a pro photographer is about as well as tons of great tidbits by one of the best in the business. The pictures in the book themselves inspire you to try similar setups and will definitely progress your talent.
