Owen Zastava Pitt – accountant, chosen one, and world-saving monster hunter – is back with the crew from Monster Hunter International to save the world one more time. This time from Correia’s version of Cthulhu-style monsters, or Old Ones, who are angry that a simple human caused them pain and want revenge.

The story picks up shortly after the ending of Monster Hunters International, as Owen finishes up a standard government contracted chupacabra hunt in Mexico. Accompanied by former stripper Holly and former high school chemistry teacher Trip, these graduates from the Newbie Squad would happily follow Owen into the pit of hell with only a butter knife and glass of cold water.

After the hunt is successful, a mysterious necromancer sent by the Old Ones shows up with his zombie army to take Owen into custody. Owen fends off this new adversary but in the process lands himself in a Mexican jail filled with bloodthirsty criminals and a pair of vampires. Eventually rescued by the federal agents of the Monster Control Bureau, things go from bad to worse when his rescuers use Owen and his family as bait. However, this is one gun-toting family the necromancer won’t be able to take down so easily.

During the story we find about the worst day in MHI history, as well as some shocking information about the biggest thorns in MHI’s side, Agents Franks and Myers. The two Federal Agents that threatened to kill Owen in Monster Hunters International and now dangle him like a worm on a hook.

As the necromancer closes in on Owen, the supernatural world explodes with zombie elephants, brain worms, Japanese ogres, gangland gnomes, and an Internet troll that is an actual troll! MHI responds with better guns, bigger explosions and lots of fast-paced action.

Overall, this book doesn’t have the great consistency of Monster Hunters International, but it has higher peaks and lower valleys. At over 600 pages, there are a few places where the book’s pacing drags and a few times things go from comedic to just plain silly. The ending, though, is like stuffing a lit stick of dynamite into a pumpkin filled with chocolate pudding. You won’t look away and the payoff is totally worth it!

If you are a fan of urban fantasy or of Monster Hunters International, go get a bag of popcorn and this book and prepare for a fun roller coaster ride full of guns and monsters.

This is a great series. There's definitely some language in this book (though, it seemed less than the first one).

Pitt and MHI find themselves facing the past in order to save the future. Pitt goes through hell and back again to save the world from the old ones again. We learn more about some of the other characters in the cast in this book, and it makes us want to spend even more time with them.

I caught myself laughing quite a bit with this one. I loved the "Troll" character, and how he spoke. I listened to the audible version, and that probably helped. The jokes were awesome.

All in all, a great book if you like supernatural (the show) type scenes/banter. Great stuff!

GREAT book!! So far this series has been great! You have action

    GREAT book!!
So far this series has been great! You have action, laughs & the supernatural. It can't get better. If you think you have in-law problems, you haven't met Owen's!

Spoiler: This series has been great, & I love that Owen is a badass, but it is getting a little over the top. I really enjoyed that he was an average guy that kicked supernatural butt, I am not so thrilled that he is becomimg a "super" hero. While I appreciate the technical information about the guns, I think Mr. Correia gets too detailed for me.
